Visible Steps: a collaboration to make every step count

Some footprints go unseen, but they’re there.

Every day in Barcelona, thousands of steps cross the streets. Some rush to work, others stroll without hurry, and some are just searching for a place to rest. But among all those steps, there are some that almost no one stops to notice: the footsteps of over 1,300 people living on the streets.

They leave marks too. Marks that travel kilometers in search of shelter, a bathroom, a hot meal. Marks that endure cold and exhaustion. Invisible footprints that deserve to be seen.

This is where Visible Steps comes in, an initiative that turns a simple, everyday gesture, like putting on a pair of socks, into an act of empathy. A project that brings together ROSAPARKS (a creative consultancy focused on social impact), Arrels Fundació (supporting people experiencing homelessness in Barcelona since 1987), the illustrator Javirroyo, and us, American Socks, with a simple yet powerful goal: to raise awareness of homelessness through design and solidarity.

A project that walks with purpose

The idea was born during a creative meeting organized by ROSAPARKS, where NGOs and creative minds came together to explore new ways of communicating social causes. From that connection, the seed of Visible Steps emerged: socks that not only provide warmth but also shine a light on what we often overlook.

Over the course of two years, the project took shape alongside Arrels Fundació, with the collaboration of Javirroyo, who brought his signature style and social commitment to the project.

From American Socks, we contributed what we do best: crafting socks with an urban soul, sustainability at heart, and a meaningful message. We donated 300 pairs for sale through Arrels and produced 200 more to distribute through our own channels. The estimated proceeds will go entirely to supporting the foundation’s programs.

Because every step, no matter how small, can bring us closer to a fairer, more conscious, and more compassionate city.

Socks that warm, support, and protect

It may seem simple, but a sock can mean far more than we imagine. For someone living on the street, a clean pair of socks can make the difference between staying healthy or falling ill. They’re a barrier against the cold, a shield from the pavement, a gesture of care.

We like to think of a sock as a tiny home. It wraps, protects, and gives warmth. It’s the minimal shelter that accompanies steps when there’s no roof above.

And beyond the physical, it represents something deeper: support. Socks are made to hold the feet, to cushion every step. In this project, they become a symbolic support for those walking without a path.

As Javirroyo, the illustrator, says:

“Socks are the second skin of people living on the streets.”

His design, simple yet full of meaning, reflects a blend of resilience and vulnerability.

For us at American Socks, participating in this initiative isn’t just about design or production, it’s a way to use what we love —urban culture, art, and sustainability—to take a meaningful step toward change.

When design becomes activism

At American Socks, we believe creativity can move mountains... or at least shift minds.

Our essence has always been tied to the streets: freedom, expression, and movement. But this time, those same streets remind us of another reality: that of those who inhabit them without choice.

Visible Steps turns design into a universal language. A pair of socks can be a garment, yes, but also a statement: a refusal to look away, a reminder that every step counts, even those we take to reach out to others.

Every purchase of these socks helps fund real programs of housing, social care, and support. It’s a simple, yet powerful way to walk together.

Seeing the footprints others don’t

This campaign isn’t about pity, it’s about awareness. It’s not about looking down; it’s about looking with empathy. Behind every step is a story, and behind every pair of socks, a chance to make a difference.

At American Socks, we’re proud to be part of a collaboration that combines art, activism, and social commitment. We hope every person who wears these socks remembers that not every step leaves a visible mark, but every footprint matters.

We may not be able to solve homelessness with a single gesture, but we can take a step in the right direction.

We thank ROSAPARKS, Arrels Fundació, and Javirroyo for trusting us and allowing a simple act—putting on a pair of socks—to become a gesture of care and visibility.

Behind every pair of socks is a story that walks. Stories that endure, that dream, that deserve to keep going. With Visible Steps, we want those stories to be seen, heard, and felt in every stride.

Because we all leave footprints,
but not all are visible.

This initiative ensures none are left in the shadows.

Every pair counts.
